Included with your registration for the Congress is the  Vascular Day Programming on Friday, October 18th, in addition to the National Stroke Course, National Stroke Rehabilitation Course, and the National Stroke Nursing Course being delivered on Saturday, October 19th. Among the highlights:

Last year, more than 1000 delegates attended the Congress in Calgary, Alberta.

The Congress Program Committee, chaired by Dr. Michael Hill and Dr. Mark Bayley, has begun the review process.  The committee is judging abstracts based on scientific merit, originality, interest for Congress members and clarity of expression.  Accepted abstracts will also be consideration for spotlight at Vascular Day, the one-time showcase of Canadian vascular health research.

Abstracts accepted for poster or platform presentations at the Congress will be published int he journal Stroke. Notification for acceptance will be made in early June.

The Congress draws people from across Canada and around the world to share ideas, collaborate and learn about new approaches to research, clinical care and policymaking.

Abstracts are welcome from national and international applicants from all disciplines and may be submitted in English or French and presented at the Congress in either language.

Applicants should categorize their abstract based on one of the six subject area categories provided in the abstract submission system. These include:

- Prevention (Primary and Secondary) & Acute Treatment of Stroke
- Rehabilitation
- Basic Biomedical
- Health Systems
- Ongoing Clinical Trials (Poster Only)

The Congress program committee will review the abstracts. Abstracts will be judged on scientific merit, originality, and interest for Congress members and clarity.

Dr. Hakim said he is honoured to have been selected. His lecture, to be delivered in Montreal at the October congress, will be a retrospective on the impact of the Canadian Stroke Network and how it has achieved change in stroke research and care in Canada.

Dr. Michael Tymianski of the University of Toronto presented the 2012 Hnatyshyn Lecture at the Canadian Stroke Congress in Calgary. Dr. Tymianski also won the network’s Paul Morley Mentorship Award for 2012 for his work in encouraging the next generation of stroke researchers.

Throughout the three-day meeting, Lori Beaver, patient experience strategist at the Foothills Medical Centre, said she “kept thinking about all of the brilliant minds that were at Congress  . . . all with one common goal in mind: improved stroke care. As a stroke survivor, it was wonderful to see and hear.”

Dr. Pierre Boyle, chair of the Board of the CSN, said Congress co-chairs Dr. Michael Hill of the Calgary Stroke Program and Dr. Mark Bayley of Toronto Rehab and the Program Committee deserve huge thanks “an outstanding scientific/clinical/training program. It is obvious that this event has generated new heights of scientific and clinical interest this year and has become THE stroke event of the year.”

The 2013 Canadian Stroke Congress will take place in Montreal from Oct. 17 to 20. For one time, the meeting will be held in conjunction with four other congresses — organized in parallel by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Canadian Stroke Network, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and Hypertension Canada. Congresses will overlap for a one-day Vascular Summit, designed to expand understanding of disease prevention and common risk factors for chronic disease. Participants in each of the congresses will also have an opportunity to attend sessions at any of the four congresses.
